It’s almost that time of year! You know… that time of year when you get to swap out your bulky sweaters, wool pants, boots and other warm winter-wear for the spring and summer tees and tanks, shorts, skirts and dresses, and sandals.

I know just as well as the next gal how hard it can be to part with certain items, and how difficult even just making the decision to say goodbye can be. But, it is something you’ve gotta do to stay organized and keep that season’s wardrobe at a decent size (ha… what’s the fun in that though, right?) so you have space for the new items you want to purchase.

There is no need to save everything you have ever owned and loved. Things go out of style and/or people change. you are not always going to love to wear that one skirt or those heels that were SO FAB 5 years ago.

I know everyone says it, but make piles. Make a pile of the items you will:

KEEP. Some of these may need to be laundered or ironed after coming out of storage and when you are ready to put them away you will be able to do so in a more organized fashion.

DONATE. Pretty self-explanatory. When I have my pile of clothes to donate, and before I head to the local thrift shop, I let my sister and cousins so the bags just in case there is something they would love to add to their closet.

TOSS. Let’s be honest, sometimes there are just things that you shouldn’t donate (items with holes or stains, personal garments, articles of clothing that have seen their day and are just too worn out for anyone to love and wear… you get the idea.)

SELL I don’t do this very often, but you might want to. And it’s not a bad idea! Check out businesses in your area that buy gently used clothing or, if your brave and have a bunch of stuff to sell, open up an eBay shop!

So now you’re ready to go through and start editing. (And don’t be too nice!) Keep only the pieces that you will truly wear again. Not those items you might will fit into again. Not that shirt that might go with something, someday. I guarantee you, 99% of the time, you will not wear these items again.   Each season, I try to get a little cut-throat about deleting from my closet and real about what I will actually wear.

Of course there are those pieces I can’t bear to part with in that moment, but I tell myself that, if when the season is over, I haven’t worn it, it is gone. Makes sense, right? If you only own pieces you love and actually want to and do wear, figuring out your outfit each day is SO much easier!

Something that has been a game changer for me is my style app. If you haven’t heard of these types of apps, you need to know about them now! With this app, I am able to manage my wardrobe and create outfits I know I love to wear. I always seem to forget what my “go-to” outfits were before I purchased new items, but I know I still love them. And they’re all right there and ready for me to browse any evening or morning I have no idea what I’m going to wear.

Sure, it takes some time to take pictures of every article of clothing you own but, trust me, it’s insanely worth it.

I have also created a collection within the app for style “inspiration.” I know you’ve been on Pinterest and see a cute outfit that you can either already piece together with items you already own (or maybe you need to only purchase that basic long sleeved black tee – or whatever it is – to complete the look). It has been an awesome place for me to go when I’m feeling a change in my pre-made looks.

A couple years ago InStyle magazine had a great infographic that put ‘Should It Stay or Should It Go’ perfectly.
