So summer is coming to an end and you still haven’t landed your dream job in PR, or let alone any job in PR. If you’re like me (and I hope you are because you want to work in PR) you’re quite social and actively tweeting.
Now is the time to use this to your advantage because it is possible to get your job through Twitter. Trust me, I did it.
Clean Up
While you spent your college years tweeting about your sorority sisters, quoting lyrics from emo songs and sharing pictures at parties now is the time to clean up your Twitter act. Delete any tweets or pictures that don’t represent the best you. After all, future employers will be looking at your tweets.
Change
While “cat lover” or “southern belle” may describe you, Twitter only allows you 160 characters to describe yourself to potential employers. I don’t think PR executives are looking for someone to love Fluffy back at home. Change your profile to read,” Recent @(insert university) grad looking for employment in the #PublicRelations industry.” Don’t forget to include your city as well in the location option.
Follow
Do your research and follow any agencies and publicist in your area, or desired area. Follow your local PRSA chapter and other networking groups to see if anyone is hiring.
You’re on Twitter for a reason, so tweet! Tweet to those agencies and publicist you’ve followed and engage in conversation with them. Favorite and retweet what they’re saying, eventually you’ll get on their radar.
When I graduated I did all these things and within a month one of the publicist I was following tweeted me back and told me they had PR coordinator position available. We exchanged emails through a direct message and set up an interview. After two weeks of interviews I obtained my first PR job all thanks to the aid of Twitter! Don’t you love technology?
